Suroosh Alvi of VICE travels to Bin Laden's infamous compound to see what people really think about living next to America's most vilified fugitive. Unsurprisingly, their concern lies less with the proximity of Bin Laden than the chaos that his death has sparked. Although the controversy over whether or not Pakistan was harboring Bin Laden and the "trust deficit" is the primary focus for the American media, Pakistani news is busy covering the onslaught of violence that has broken out since the May 2nd raid. The people have seen a marked increase in American drone attacks, while the Taliban continues its retaliation with a relentless wave of suicide bombings. Anti-American sentiment has never run higher and this turbulent nation clearly has bigger issues than Bin Laden's death to contend with.

Inzwischen ist es wirklich fraglich ob Osama überhaupt dort war, entweder ist er schon viel länger tot oder er war nie da, doch die Medien und die Patrioten in den USA haben dieses Tag natürlich gefeiert.

Interessanter Trailer für einen interessanten Film in einer komplizierten Region der Welt, wo vor der Nase der absoluten Armut eine der Hauptschlagadern der Transport und Güterwege per Schiffen verläuft, beladen voller Reichtum und auf dem Weg von Südost Asien nach Europa, zu uns in Supermärkte und andere Konsumtempel.

Diese Woche jährte sich die Fukushima-Katastrophe zum zweiten Mal. Bei dem Erdbeben wurde Japan verwüstet und einer der schlimmsten Atomunfälle aller Zeiten wurde ausgelöst. Dabei verseuchte das Fukushima-Daiichi-Kraftwerk die Umgebung mit tödlicher Strahlung. Die umliegenden Städte wurden in aller Eile evakuiert, sodass nur leere Straßen, verlassene Häuser und wilde Tiere zurückblieben. In der kleinen Stadt Tomioka, weniger als zehn Kilometer von der Unfallstelle des Kraftwerks entfernt, weigert sich ein Mann, sein Zuhause aufzugeben: Naoto Matsumura ist 53 Jahre alt und baut in fünfter Generation Reis an. Er ist bestimmt der sturste Mensch in Japan, wenn nicht auf der ganzen Welt.

„Ich bin hier geboren und aufgewachsen”, erzählt er uns. „Und wenn ich sterbe, dann hier in Tomioka.” Naoto ist braungebrannt von der Sonne, in seinem Gesicht zeichnen sich Lachfalten ab. Unter seinen schweren Augenlidern stechen seine dunklen Augen hervor—so stellt man sich keinen Rebellen vor, der der Regierung die Stirn bietet, indem er einfach weiter hier wohnen bleibt, obwohl das verboten wurde. Naoto sieht das aber alles ganz locker.

Naoto ist einer riesigen Menge Strahlung in der Atmosphäre ausgesetzt—dem 17-Fachen der normalen Dosis—und hat eine zeitlang kontaminiertes Fleisch, Gemüse und Fisch gegessen. Darum wollte die Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (die japanische NASA) Tests an ihm durchführen. „Sie haben mich durchgecheckt. Für die bin ich der ‚Champion‘”, sagt er. Er hatte die höchsten Strahlenwerte in ganz Japan. „Sie meinten, dass ich von den Strahlen erst in 30 bis 40 Jahren krank werde. Aber das ist mir egal, dann bin ich wahrscheinlich sowieso schon tot.”

As Syria's bloody civil war enters its third year, fighting has reached the country's Kurdish-dominated northeast, a region until recently almost untouched by the conflict. The Kurdish PYD party and its YPG militia, which is affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in neighboring Turkey, took over control of much of Hassakeh province from the Assad regime in the summer of 2012, and with it control of Syria's precious oilfields.

But the PYD's hopes of staying neutral in the conflict and building an autonomous Kurdish state were dashed when clashes broke out with Syrian rebel forces in the strategic border city of Ras al-Ayn. That encounter quickly escalated into an all-out war between the Kurds and a powerful alliance of jihadist groups, including the al-Qaeda affiliates ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra.

In September of 2013, VICE crossed the border into Syria's Kurdish region to document the YPG's counteroffensive against the jihadists, who had struck deep into rural Hassakeh in an attempt to surround and capture Ras al-Ayn. With unparalleled access to the Kurdish and Syrian Christian fighters on the frontlines, we found ourselves witnessing a bitter and almost unreported conflict within the Syrian war, where the Assad regime is a neutral spectator in a life or death struggle between jihadist-led rebels and Kurdish nationalists, pitting village against village and neighbor against neighbor.

Ein interessanter Einblick in die kurdische Perspektive der aktuellen Lage in Syrien. Mir selbst sind und waren schon immer die Kurden am sympathischsten von allen Positionen in dieser Region, sie sind weltoffen und modern im Denken, das gänzliche Gegenteil zu den Islamisten und deren untereinander verstrittenen Splittergruppen die absolut nichts mit einem Freiheitskampf am Hut haben. Die Kurden bilden eine Art Brücke zwischen Pro Assad und FSA Seite.



When Russian President Vladimir Putin banned gay "propaganda" in June last year, Russia's LGBT community went from being a stigmatized fringe group to full-blown enemies of the state. Homophobia becoming legislation means it's now not only accepted in Russia but actively encouraged, which has led to a depressing rise in homophobic attacks and murders.

The main aim of the law, which essentially bans any public display of homosexuality, is to prevent minors from getting the impression that being gay is normal. Which means that, if you're young and gay in Putin's Russia, you're ostracized and cut off from any kind of legal support network.

In part 1 we get a ride with Artem, a young driver for Moscow's gay taxi service "Our Taxi", meet Nikita, a 17-year-old activist who has been labeled a "propagandist" because of his LGBT rights YouTube channel, and Yulia, a young lesbian who started LGBT self defense classes after her favorite gay bar in Moscow was attacked by about 20 armed men in October 2012.

Ich selbst stehe Russland sehr zwiespältig gegenüber, innenpolitisch ist es mir äußerst suspekt wenn es um LGBT Rechte geht, doch wirtschafts- und außenpolitisch gesehen bin ich ein Freund Russlands. Doch die Entwicklung in den letzten Jahren dort wenn es um homosexuelle Menschen geht ist verwerflich und rückschrittlich, auch wenn es große regionale Unterschiede gibt, so ist es nicht förderlich wenn man dem rechten und konservativ/religiösen Flügel der Politik dieses Landes mehr und mehr Macht gibt. Ungewiss wie es um die russische LGBT Gemeinschaft bestellt ist, völlig unabhängig von der ganzen Sotschi Debatte.

Most people were first exposed to Michael C. Ruppert through the 2009 documentary, Collapse, directed by Chris Smith. Collapse was one of the scariest documentaries about our world and the fragile the state of our planet. It was also one of VICE's favorite films from the past ten years. Michael was forced to leave the LAPD after claiming that the CIA was complicit in selling drugs across America, and he quickly became one of the most original and strident voices to talk about climate change, government corruption, and peak oil through his website, "From the Wilderness."

Following the release of Collapse, Michael's personal life underwent something of a collapse itself and he paid off all his debts, left behind all his friends, and moved with his dog Rags to Colorado, planning to commit suicide.

VICE caught up with Michael in the middle of the epic beauty of the Rocky Mountains at the end of last year. We found a man undergoing a spiritual rebirth—still passionate about the world and with a whole new set of apocalyptic issues to talk about. Apocalypse, Man is an intimate portrait of a man convinced of the imminent collapse of the world, but with answers to how the human spirit can survive the impending apocalypse.

Mir hat schon der Dokufilm Collapse sehr gefallen, bei dem es um das Ende des Erdölzeitalters geht und damit auch dem sich mehr und mehr bemerkbar machenden Wirtschaftszusammenbruch. Hier geht es darum das er sich fast gänzlich von der Konsumwelt unabhängig gemacht hat, nachdem er schon so weit war Selbstmord begehen zu wollen. Auch wenn er den meisten unbekannt ist, so war er es der der Welt auch bekannt gemacht hat das die CIA von der Drogenprohibition und dem verdeckten Drogenhandel mit Kartellen und Warlords profitiert. Mit anderen Worten, er zeigt dass nur Systemaussteiger dem System wirklich den Stinkefinger zeigen können, selbst wenn man sich dafür vom materialistischen/kapitalistischen Lebensluxus trennen muss.

Interessant ist auch die musikalische Untermalung, ich sag nur "Rundgang um die transzendentale Säule der Singularität", erzeugt ne angenehme Endzeitstimmung

At the end of 2013, Uruguay became the first country in the world to fully legalize marijuana. VICE correspondent Krishna Andavolu headed over to Uruguay to check out how the country is adjusting to a legally regulated marijuana market. Along the way, he meets up with Uruguay's president, José Mujica, to burn one down and talk about the president's goal of a chicken in every pot, a car in every garage, and six cannabis plants per household.

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Mexico to see the effects of cartel oil theft firsthand. In Part 1 we embeds with Mexican soldiers on patrol as they survey the oil pipeline and protect employees in violent Reynosa. Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels are diversifying. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil.

Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in US gas stations. As police fight the thieves, and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelines continues to climb.

On June 12, three Israeli teens were kidnapped while hitchhiking through the West Bank city of Hebron. In response, the Israeli army launched a severe crackdown in the West Bank, arresting hundreds of Palestinians. Two weeks later, the bodies of the Israeli teens were found and Israel blamed their murders on the militant group Hamas. Then last week, the body of a 16-year-old Palestinian boy was found in East Jerusalem after being burned alive in a revenge attack carried out by right-wing Israelis.

Inside Israel and throughout the West Bank, the killings set off massive demonstrations the likes of which have not been seen since the Second Intifada more than a decade ago. Meanwhile, the Israeli military has been carrying out airstrikes over the besieged Gaza Strip in an effort to root out Hamas, which has launched hundreds of homemade rockets over the southern border of Israel during the past several weeks. Despite mounting criticism and civilian causalities, Israel has vowed to increase its military operation in Gaza in the coming days.

VICE News is in Israel and Palestine amid the mounting tension as Israelis and Palestinians prepare for the next round of violent confrontations. In this first dispatch, we go to a protest in the mixed Israeli-Palestinian town of Acre and speak with Palestinians intent on using peaceful means to make their voices heard.

The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced their intention to reestablish the caliphate and declared their leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.

Flush with cash and US weapons seized during recent advances in Iraq, the Islamic State’s expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.

Elsewhere in territory it has held for some time, the Islamic State has gone about consolidating power and setting up a government dictated by Sharia law. While the world may not recognize the Islamic State, in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the group is already in the process of building a functioning regime.

VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings. In part one, Dairieh heads to the frontline in Raqqa, where Islamic State fighters are laying siege to the Syrian Army’s division 17 base.

Female guards, valued for their covert presence, precision, and elegance, are in particularly high demand at the moment. VICE China recently visited Beijing's Yun Hai bodyguard training school to see how this fierce fighting force is trained.
